A record was made of one of the annual Christmas concerts held at the Queen's Hall in Hayes. The LP is a treasured possession because it brings back such good memories of this occasion each year. For the second half of the concert, the Mellow Lane Girls Choir was joined by mostly 5th and 6th form boys and male members of staff, not forgetting some Hayden Hall singers, to give a performance of excerpts from Handel's Messiah.
The programme consisted of soloists and the choir.
The first half of the concert was made up of juniors and seniors singing more traditional carols and appealing rarer pieces. Some of the juniors went on to join the senior choir later on. That was my dream come true when I was able
to be a member of the much-acclaimed choir directed by the fabulous Brian Trant L.R.A.M. A.R.C.O. (To hear something different from the choir, click on 'next image' above.

It was not just the pride and enjoyment of being part of this choir, but the introduction to so much wonderful music like Handel's Messiah and songs with lovely and at times, very challenging, choral arrangements. These were sung accompanied or unaccompanied. As I sang Contralto in the choir, it gave me quite an education in harmony and made studying the theory of music much more interesting.

I too sang at those concerts, starting in 1958 and going through to 1962. This number was always the first of the Messiah excerpts to be sung, and I always go back to those days whenever I hear it. Thanks to Marian for letting us hear the choir itself. As with her, those concerts opened my mind to the sheer joy of choral singing. I still enjoy it here in Egham and it's something most of us can try. Making music is one of the most exciting activities there is.
