Who would have thought this modest entrance leads to one of the most famous wartime sites in the country, the underground bunker from where No.11 Fighter Group was directed during the Battle of Britain, and for the rest of the War. It is now a museum, but only open weekends until the 15th September, Otherwise and after mid September visits must be booked in advance. It's the only part of RAF Uxbridge not sold to the developers. There is not only the control centre, but rooms covering Bomber Command, the WAAF, and the history of RAF Uxbridge with some interesting aerial photos. Be warned, the museum is 60 feet down (and back up again!)

It would be interesting to know what will happen to this part of the site when the base is being redeveloped. Would you know, David?

Marian, thank you for the query. You will see above that the bunker and a few buildings next to it have not been sold to the developers, so I imagine the bunker will remain a governenment museum just like the War Rooms that have been retained in Whitehall. It is easily accessible from the public footpath through the base, as well as by car.
