You will see that the Van and Horses was a Harmans pub. The Harmans brewery was in the town of Uxbridge, roughly where the Chimes Shops are now. It was not uncommon in the late '50s to smell the brewing process hanging over the town from time to time.

I remember that winter well, I was driving buses from Uxbridge garage and drove the 224 along that road many many times.
I also worked part time in the Engine West Drayton another Harmans pub, a great pint of bitter.

Bondyboy67. I can remember the 224 which went down Cowley Road, along with the 222 which still does, but I cannot remember where it went to. Can you remind me? PS, thanks for the 10 stars.

Hi David. 224 went from Uxbridge to Laleham via West Drayton Colnbrook Wraysbury Staines. This bus was hourly and was the favourite of most drivers.
We also did 224a and 224b these two only went to West Drayton with one going from the station to Mill Road and the other to Stockley Estate.
These were operated by RF Buses single deckers, the passenger doors were not allowed to be used and had been screwed closed, amazing as nowadays most buses can't operate with the doors open. In winter we used to carry an allan key to allow the doors to close once we got passed Sipson. Regards Chris

Thank you Bondyboy67 for that information. I wish the 224 was still running. Today I need to use THREE buses to get from Staines to Uxbridge! (and a fourth to get from home into Staines.)
