This is a picture of St Christopher's before it became St Christopher's! It was a Jewish Boys School. Now it's the Lombardy Retail Park. The school stood roughly where McDonald's and Sports Direct etc are now.

For those that don't remember, The Grapes junction used to be staggered... the end of Coldharbour Lane was altered when Lombardy Retail Park was built in the 90s, so it ended opposite Yeading Lane. Before that, to cross the junction from Coldharbour Lane to Yeading Lane you had to turn right, then left.

I used to go to boxing lessons / training in St Christopher's with my mate Andy Lowe who lived in Chaucer Avenue, this would have been around 1955 ish.
I think they used me as a punch bag but Andy was a very good boxer.

Lowe rings a very loud bell... I'm sure I remember a Mrs Lowe living near us in Chaucer Avenue, I think right opposite, with the Barnes's on one side and the Cloughs on the other. We were Number 8, done a quick calculation in my head and think she would have been Number 7 probably.

Andy's house was on the left hand side coming from Shakespeare Ave and only a few houses up. He had an older brother and went to Southall tech with me around 1953 to 1956. He was a good boxer and I remember once he fought at the Albert Hall taking unauthorised absence from school to go there.

Yep, that would be right. I only remember a Mrs Lowe... not Mr Lowe or any other Lowes. This would have been late 60s (and I was very young).

I've just noticed these pictures and comments. I can't imagine the area where the school was now being shops. I used to work in Yeading Lane and so, most weekdays would walk up to the Grapes to wait for the 55 bus to go home. The school building was grim but I took an interest in it because I worked for the Dental Surgeon, Stewart Westgate, who was the son of Mr Frederick Westgate JP, the headmaster of St Christopher's. He used to sometimes bring individual boys to the surgery so they could do some gardening. It must have been a welcome break coming to a nice bright property after the darkness of St Christopher's.

I meant to say, also, that it was interesting reading about the boxing lessons there as I didn't know that any outside activities took place there. Stewart had been keen on boxing so I wonder if he had anything to do with the lessons held at the school?

Who would have believed Marian what this exchange would have led to!

Marian's mentions of Stuart Westgate were spotted by his daughter, Susanne, who has now supplied us with a series of previously unknown pictures of St Christopher's during her grandfather's tenure. And Marian and Susanne have been able to swap memories of Stuart Westgate and his dental practice.
