This superb picture is from Paul Pickering, who writes:
Thank you for uploading the photo of the Firefly pub that I sent you to the Hayes website.
After sending you the photo I later read on-line, that the photo was actually a screen-capture
taken from a film called "The Reckoning" (1969) starring Nicol Williamson. So, we can positively date the photo to Autumn/Winter 1969.
My parents' house was literally 150 yards around the corner in Sherwood Avenue from The Firefly. However, I do not recall a film being made near my home at that time because I would have been away serving in the RAF in Winter '69.
Upon learning that the photo was screen-captured from a film, I became curious to know what the film "The Reckoning" was about and have obtained a dvd copy from the U.S.
Verdict = Not bad. A bit like a cross between an old 1960's tv series called "The Plane Makers" which starred Patrick Wymark and the classic Michael Caine film "Get Carter" - although "The Reckoning" is nowhere near as good and also quite dated now. Never-the-less, its an interesting record of the times.
Why I am emailing you again is because my dvd-player software may be a little better than the software that produced the photo that I originally sent you. I have managed to screen-captured a very much better photo of the Firefly from the film which I am now attaching. Actually, I have merged two screen-capture images together to show a wider angle shot of the old pub in all its glory that shows a lot more detail and clarity.
It's somehow nice to know that the old watering hole is preserved for posterity in a film.
Hope you like it.
