Amazing pictures. I wonder if that was "hard labour" or if they loved doing it (I suspect a bit of both!)


Is that a black hole those two are standing by the in the trench? Or a tool box, or lump of wood?


I believe top-right you can see the Savoy cinema in the distance (known as The Essoldo in the 60s)

As you say, a bit of both! Note that none are overweight.
The black hole is a hole. Pick axe being used to dig this extra hole and I can just make out a rope which I guess is attached to a bucket to take the earth out! Very hard work.
