The top page shows payments for my piano exam. Underneath is a page showing the work I was doing for the London GCE O Level music theory which, when passed, was the equivalent of 5 ABRSM Grades and those ABRSM exams didn't need to be taken because the qulification was already there.

The pages here are from my piano lessons notebook showing when Grade 5 (ABRSM) was approaching and also an example of my GCE O Level theory work with Mr Brian Trant at Mellow Lane Comprehensive School (now Hewens College). Passing this O Level was equivalent to taking 5 Grades of theory with the ABRSM. (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music).

I didn't understand theory at all! My first piano teacher didn't do any, the second one used little Associated Board theory books but never explained what it was all about and expected us to do the work each week! My last piano teacher, Mrs Lovis, was the nicest; she didn't do any theory with us as far as I remember and instead of boring classical music let us choose more popular music that we wanted to learn. I only went to her for a few months before we emigrated. The last exam I had taken was with piano teacher number 2, Mrs Rixon, where I did Grade IV.
