I must dig out again my brother's photos of Hayes Town. His were taken late 70s, I think this is probably early to mid 70s? In fact, I'm pretty sure it's early 70s. The telephone exchange in East Avenue would be visible in the shot if it had been built. It was being built at the time we moved into Church Road in 1972... I used to watch it from the rec, then go home and try to build a copy with Lego! So, going by that, and by the cars in the pic, I would date this pic at about 1970 or 71?

Oh wow, I've just realised... you can see the wall of the Working Men's Club!!! This is the first time I recall seeing ANY part of it. I remember it so well from helping the milkman. I used to take a crate in there on a Saturday and up a flight of stairs. The place absolutely reeked of booze and fags! I think the door I went in was over on the right-hand side. The town was so much better with it there, as it was set way back from the road, so Station Road was far less cluttered and claustrophobic, more spacious. For younger visitors, Payne's is now MacDonald's and the Working Men's Club was where Argos now is.

I spent many happy hours in the old working mens club especially the Sunday lunchtime session when we had entertainers. It was never as good when they moved to Pump Lane.I used to drink there with John Hammond and Stan Clarke.
