I helped a milkman throughout my childhood. This is me delivering a pinta to our own house, 8, Chaucer Avenue, when I was helping "John" the Express Dairy milkman. I used to get paid a Yoghurt or packet of Caramels, but often I'd eaten them before the round finished.
Later, when we moved to Church Road, I helped another Express milko called Pete (surname Poole I think.)
Used to LOVE it. Every Saturday, often for a bit before school in the mornings, and every day during school holidays. Round took in Hayes Town, bit of Clayton Road, St Anselm's, Printing House Lane, part of Botwell Lane and Church Road down as far as Townfield, where the round stopped.
Remember going into Harrison's in Printing House Lane and seeing them printing famous publications, like the Chelsea FC programmes etc. Was mesmerised by the type and must confess, I took a couple of letters home with me, which I rubbed felt pen on to see them print.
When Pete moved to Southall and worked for Unigate, he came over to Hayes on Saturdays and weekdays during the school holidays to pick up me and my brother Michael to work with him.
We were 12 and 13 at the time.
