The law is still a bit unclear . can a person , with a phone in a cradle , over Bluetooth , push a button on the phone , or should they have remote controlled on the steering wheel ? , i now you can still be prosecuted , using a handsfree , or a sat nav , if it can be proven to distract your driving . but it need to be clear cut .ie , no mobile phone use in a car by a driver , unless it can be operated by voice etc Not the phone buttons , even in a cradle . I drive a lot , i think they should just be banned from being on at all , or in view |

I was reading about a driver who taped his tablet to the steering wheel and was watching a film whilst driving - it's unbelievable what stupidity is out there! |

I'm reading all sorts of posts about what you can and can't do and they are all contradictory. Someone in authority needs to clear this mess up. |

In my opinion, drivers' phones should not even be switched on when driving. There are frequent occasions when driving, that the situation demands 100% of the driver's attention. Even talking to a passenger, is a distraction on those immediate occasions of high demand on the driver's attention.

It seems the new law applies solely to 'handheld mobile phones' However, guidance has been issued that there is a difference to 'pressing a button' and 'reprogramming' a device, even in a holder, and existing laws exist in the due care and attention area. Let's see what gets published as people get stopped. |

I heard a police officer state categorically on Radio 4 that a phone mounted on a cradle is not covered by the law; the offence is holding the phone. Yes you can touch the screen if the phone is mounted in a cradle. He said if you were seen touching it too much, the police can do you under different laws, eg driving without due care and attention. |

After driving 40 miles on the M25, chatting to a mate with my Bluetooth headset and not remembering any of the journey, for me the use of the phone by any means is a distraction. My phone is now kept in my rucksack and switched off until I get to my destination. When arriving at a new destination or in bad weather, I even turn off the radio to make sure all my attention is on driving, not singing, talking or anything else. |
