This ten minute video explains the purpose of Smart Meteres https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zIDW7H6XqA

Be aware, we all have right to refuse to have smart meters installed. It is NOT a legal requirement to have smart meters installed in our homes. Although the energy companies do imply you MUST have smart meters installed – they are not being truthful.

From the DM 30-03-17:
Quote:
The boss of one of Britain’s biggest electricity firms has questioned the ‘security and safety’ of the national £11billion roll-out of smart meters across the UK.
Vincent de Rivaz, chief executive of EDF Energy, said the programme faces ‘many challenges’ and was critical of the quality of the meters being offered to customers.
He added that the issues may pose a threat to ‘public confidence’ in the programme.
The smart meter project is intended to fit 26 million homes across the country with smart meters by 2020.

Also..........

The current batch of smart meters are company specific. If you opt for one, then change supplier, you will need a new one.

At some point this year, BG reckon, they are introducing a company wide one, the mark 4 apparently, that will stay in place regardless of your supplier.

By 2020 I think you will have to have one though.
