Euston stations footfall set to double with HS2 (Rail pg.12 in summary)

If HS2 is built, Euston stations platform level would become two level and expand to the west of its present site to take High Speed trains from the north as well as High speed trains from the West Coast Main Line (the ‘Pendolinos’), the ‘slow’ London Midland services from Manchester, Birmingham, Rugby and Liverpool, and London Overground services from Watford Junction (unless they are diverted via Camden Road to Stratford or West / East Croydon via the West London Line).

To handle the extra passengers the present 1960s London Underground ticket hall would be lowered which would affect the escalators and disused 1900s lift shafts and be rebuilt. As part of this a concourse under Euston Road by the Friends Meeting House and Wellcome Collection building to the East of the Euston Underpass to the East End of Euston Square Circle, Hammersmith and City and Metropolitan Line LU station. This will replace the ‘nuclear bomb doors’ at that end of the platform that ‘contain’ the badly kept and unhygienic former toilets at that end of the platforms. The extra capacity would increase passengers in the morning peak from 2,500 to 12,400 and to fit the tunnels, the taxi rank and bus station would move to the north end of the station.

Additionally capacity under the British Library, Victoria Line tunnels, and further East along the Euston Road will be made for a ‘double end’ Crossrail Line two station as part of the Clapham Junction to Seven Sisters inner London Tunnel serving bothe Euston and Kings Cross / St Pancras. Another one like that could be built with an entrance at Victoria and one to the south side of the parks to the north before heading to Picadilly / Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road (subject to planning permission for Westminster council / Crown Estates)
