anyone know about charging nicads?
i have a 24 volt power tool
i broke the charger,it is in 2 pieces, one that plugs into the wall socket, that is toast and the base that the battery sits in,i can get the wall part for a sensible amount of money but they are described as for lead acid batteries only, the base unit has a chip and several other bits in it so the question is.....will the lead acid part work with my base unit, voltages and amps are the same

No, no, no,
Different chemical make ups of the battery need different charge rates and time for resting before the next charge cycle. E.g charge for 2 mins or to a tempeture, rest for 1 min. Then start again. Then another type charges different.
I can't remember what battery need what, but that is it basically.
With like a car battery, it charges at one rate until the battery is at the same level as the charger.

I overcharged a battery on an almost new drill, it overheated and warped!!Crazy, the chargers should have electronics that prevent overcharging. Like you say, meant the drill was useless to me.
