No wonder you decided to leave Edwin!! That's all shocking and so unfair. And I thought the country had only recently gone completely mad!

Hi, I worked for EMI from 1975 through to about 1991. I started an Instrument Maker Apprentice on the 5th Floor of the EMI Varian Building (was the EMI Cabinet Factory), beside the Engineering Building and next to the railway. Below us was the EMI Medical Division; we used to peek through the doors to see body scanners being built  . I can remember the Queen making a visit to the EMI Body Scanner Section, the Apprentice Training School was all closed-off behind a plaster-board + stud partition, she wouldn't have known we were behind there when she got herded by and I remember everything being freshly painted. I can also remember the Training Schools' fabrication instructor's (Sid Hoad) favourite punchline when taking-up your test piece to him to mark; he'd say "Thats no bloody good, start again" :x . I was awarded Apprentice of the Year (I got awarded round plaque) and so went-on to work for EMI Systems and Weapons Division in Feltham (which became EMI Defence Electronics and (eventually) Thorn-EMI); I did the occasional stint at the Radar Division on the other side of Dawley Road, working on Cymbaline Mortar Locating Radar and Bomb Fuzing. The experience memorable for me was knocking-off work (or in lunch-time) and popping into the Staff Sales Shop just by the main gate on the way onto the site. I've spent many happy hours in there (and in he smaller Staff Sales Shop in Feltham); I've still got the upright freezer, purchased from staff sales, still going strong some 27 years ago (perhaps I shouldnt have said that) :?

I also started in App training school Nov 16 1953,did good, graduated to the weld shop where I made a fish tank, bit of a job getting it thru the gate on my motor bike, went thru established route of 6 months on a Lathe, Mill, Grinding, Bench Etc. years later aged 24 found myself in Miami looking for work, banged on the door of a machine shop at Miami airport told the boss what I could do, he asked my age, he told not so politely to f*** off nobody of that age could do all that. Retired now from NASA to Florida making footsteps in the sand daily.
