While I was waiting for a GP appointment recently I overheard the receptionist.

For a non urgent appointment the waiting time is 2 weeks.
For an urgent appointment the waiting time is 2 working days.

They are now only making appointments in the mornings. So, if you have an urgent issue say Wednesday lunchtime you cannot book an appointment till Thursday morning and your appointment will be Monday.

What use is that and no wonder people are using drop in centres and A&E.

The Willow Tree surgery used to be quite busy but these days you are often in the waiting room on your own and it seems very quiet.

I may be wrong, but I seem to recall the government saying not too long ago that no-one should have to wait more than 3 days to see a GP. At my local surgery the average wait for an appointment is anywhere between 2 - 4 weeks.

So where does that put you if you get an ear infection that needs antibiotics ASAP ?

It's madness

I think you can negotiate with the receptionist if it's urgent can't you?

Where I live I can get a GP appointment the same day 95% of the time.

GP's have a duty of care towards a patient in their waiting room.

My wife has a history of blood pressure problems. A couple of years ago her blood pressure quickly rose to a frightening level. I phoned the GP and asked for an urgent appointment/home visit. I was told there would be a delay of several days. The receptionist advised that I take my wife to the hospital, a journey of several miles that would take anything up to 45 minutes to get there, and then we would have to locate a doctor with sufficient knowledge of my wife's condition.

I placed my wife in the car and drove her to the GP's surgery (about half a mile). The receptionist still refused to arrange for my wife to see a doctor. I advised the receptionist that since my wife was now inside the GP's premises that the GP had a “duty of care” towards my wife. The receptionist immediately phoned through to the GP, who then quickly came out and attended to my wife. The GP administered the appropriate drug and the blood pressure slowly normalised.

Good tip :)

Knowing my lot their next step would probably a letter telling us to go elsewhere as we had just been struck off.
