I've been told that the A40 is a complete mess with new road speed signs.

Apparently, travelling Eastbound, towards London, the first 50mph speed sign before the Polish has been changed to a 40, but, the speed sign on the entry slip from the Polish is still 50 !!

There are apparently other similar errors as they seem to be changing the speed between the Target and the Greenford flyover from 50 to 40. Some signs say 40, others 50.

What a cockup. TfL have apparently been told but haven't responded.

It's insane. They've had a 30!!!!!!!! limit from Greenford to Northolt westbound for weeks. The new limit is apparently 40 around that area which is insanely slow on the A40. The entire A40 from about the Polish War Memorial to London now has ridiculously low limits both directions.

I've been out there, with DashCam, for PocketGPSWorld (PGPSW).

Eastbound - It's still 50 from the Polish. The 40 kicks in just before the Target and is 40 all the way through to Hoovers where it was 40 right through to the Marylebone Road anyway.

Westbound - It's now 40 from Hangar Lane right through to the Target where it's 50 then up to 70 from the Polish.

Also don't forget, Eastbound, it drops from 70 to 60 just after Hillingdon Station.

The 30 was temporary apparently whilst they repaired the central barrier.

Ridiculously low.

Maybe, but, I've been on many roads where a lower limit reduces the number of cars reaching the bottleneck so aids overall journey times.

In 2004/5 they reduced the M25 western section from the M3 to the M4 to 40mph whilst they widened it. During those 2 years I got home quicker than when it was 70 and all the cars built up causing a jam.

My experience of the ludicrously low speeds on the A40 now is that it causes bunching up of traffic and has made things worse.

Interesting. Normally slower speeds controls bottlenecks further along.

The 40 is only on test apparently but what's the bet they'll leave it.

That theory is fine if there are jams further along. Maybe they should start installing variable speeds along all major roads.

They're trying funds permitting.
