How to handle your benefits.

The Post Office run deposit only accounts that allow payment of funds from benefit agencies into them. They do not pay interest and are / were run by JP Morgan Europe with the Bank of Ireland now acting as part owners of Post Office trading limited.

If you ring 0845 608 8770 you can ask to speak to a customer support diary desk officer once you pick one of the options above (IB = Incapacity Benefit, IS = Income Support, JSA = Job Seekers Allowance) they can send you a letter of authorisation to open the account at the Post Office if you have the necessary documentation and are a legalised citizen of the country entitled to benefits as granted by the asylum tribunal or your countries EU membership as part of the free movement of persons, goods, capital under its law. If a JSA receiver you claim the letter at your fortnightly signing on from the person who interviews you and you then get it stamped as authorised.

These accounts are essential in claiming for a debt relief order or bankruptcy deposit if needed as since they receive payments in only from the relevant government department for the statutory amount you receive to live on by law the amounts in them may be protected. Of course these benefits are means tested and with UK law as it is it is possible that all accounts are cross checked by the legal authorities. Benefit fraud is a crime and as such it is better to be honest so long as the money you receive / hold is yours as if it isn’t and you can’t spend it you lose your statutory benefits and can face bleak prospects. Should you apply for this and be refused you have the right to appeal using form GS24 from the job centre to the Social Security Benefits Tribunal. The one for Hillingdon meets in either Harrow or Watford.
