According to recruitment websites to get a graduete job you need a 2:2- 2:1 honours degree minimum. That is 360 credit points, 120 first year, 120 second and 120 third (of which 30-60 of teh last is teh extended essay or dissertation, except with the module orientated Open University).
OU offers certificates of 30-60 credit 1st year modules (which I hold in social science) and credit transfer for those who leave uni in their 1st and second years. Birkbeck, City, Guildhall and Goldsmiths also offer the same, some with part time study while in employment, some distance learning (though that is offerred federally by The University of London, Stuart House, Russell Square, Bloomsbury).
This year may be the last for Birkbeck to offer part time 120 credit first year cert hes at their central London buildings with 15-30 credit modules being spread over one-four years as the cost for the modules is being raised and the subjects curtailed to those that lead to professional qualified degrees (such as science for Pharmacy and medicine, legal studies and the like). Instead these may be relocated to Stratford and their new campus on the Olympic park and University of East London buildings. The lesson from this is that where business is strong and there is emplyment after an event (the much talked about legacy) for things such as Westfield Stratford and the media village there, or Stockley Park in Hillingdon, then education moves to 'Educate busy Londoners'
However FE colleges have filled this gap near Wembley and Harrow (college of North West London, Northwick Park polytechnic and Uxbridge College, Harrow College is more based around vocational and professional / vocational qualifications from Bookkeeping to Bricklaying).
However by 2015 (Rugby World Cup hosted by England) and the 2020s when England could co-host the Football world Cup, this could change. Thankfully Hillingdon and Ealing and Hounslow have the buildings to host a 'Birkbeck West' should the College and its affiliated instiutions so mandate or decide.
Passing that would be the way to a Bloomsbury based Bsc BA and postgrad courses then
