NEW PUBLICATION
AROUND HEATHROW THROUGH TIME

Before 1944 Heathrow was a hamlet in West Middlesex lying in peaceful obscurity. All this changed during the Second World War when the decision was made to locate Britain’s principal airport at Heathrow using wartime powers to prevent any opposition to the project. Using old and new images, in sepia tone and in full colour, this book of some 200 photos focuses on the changes that have occurred in Heathrow itself and the villages to the north of the airport, namely Cranford, Harlington, Sipson, Harmondsworth and Longford. These are known collectively as the Heathrow Villages and there can be few areas of the country that have seen such dramatic changes.

The RRP is £15.00 but copies can be obtained from the author for £10.00 plus £2.00 pp

 ;) I remember when the Northside was a gravel pit, and cabbage fields, with a solitary green house in the centre, the Harlinton corner greyhound track, then large tents along the northern perimiter where the aircraft would discharge passengers and freight KLM was one of the first to operate there. ;) ;)

I remember the tents! We used to walk to 'London Airport' (as it was known then,) and sit on the grass & watch the planes.
My step dad worked there and one time he let my friend & I go in a plane, which had a bar in it! We thought it was very posh!
No security then!

I've just been given one about Uxbridge since the 1930's. Can't remember the exact title but some of it is really interesting. A photo of Randalls when it was first built against the old properties surrounding it for example.

Windsor street through the ages. The start of the original bus station and the inside of the underground station when it was brand new and freshly painted.

What is - Heathrow??

I have 2 Philip Sherwood books and they are very fine local books indeed

His cynicism of the Govt handling of the planning and development of Heathrow since it's concept and to the current day makes his books more than just a compilation of pretty historical photos. Basically the locals were stitched up and always will be seems the message from his 'History of Heathrow' book

That looks like an interesting book! I might go for that next, after i've finished reading 'Heathrow ATC, the first 50yrs'
Every time we have windy weather I always think back to when the planes would use runway 23 and fly in over Southall. Such great memories of my childhood and when flying was a dream to me :)
