This video was apparently posted on you tube one month before the Malaysian plane came down by a very brave woman who wanted the world to know what was happening in Ukraine.

She claims that fighter aircraft were hiding behind passenger aircraft to protect themselves en route to bombing runs.

Is it relevant or a propaganda film? I don't know either, but it makes you think

a) Russian extremists go back to Russia and give East Ukraine back to Ukraine
b) Hamas stop firing rockets into Israel

They didn't go away you know, still get up to nasty things it's just the the media do not report it as often these days to give it all the semblance all is well.

I was in Belfast last winter and the divisions are as strong as they always were.

You are right Geezer, I get over to Belfast every 8 weeks on business, so I dont know why I forgot that one!

It is really bad over there still. Nothing like it was, but there have been a number of significant incidents which dont get any air time on the mainland. About 3 years ago, a holdall was thrown into a banking hall of a small bank in a small market square. Everyone rushed out and the explosion which occurred seconds later was enough to take the shopfront out. I was staying quite close, and although I didnt hear the bang, I heard all the sirens afterwards and saw the damage on local TV. I was also staying at the Europa and heard an controlled explosion as I prepared for bed. Nobody outside took any notice!

Pipe bombs, attacks on the PSNI and local punishment beatings are still about. Interestingly though, the marching season was quiet.

A colleague of mine who lives in Belfast reckons that a number of splinter groups want to cause damage and destruction but haven't got the resources yet. Every time they try and plan a big spectacular, they are intercepted by MI5 or the PSNI. He reckons its only a matter of time before they are successful though.

NI is suffering badly from recession. It was hit harder than anywhere else in the UK as, being the most prosperous part of the uk (in terms of growth), it had further to fall. Now groups of disillusioned young unemployed people hang about and offer rich picking for dissident groups

Didn't see much of a potential shit to radical Islam out there though. Perhaps the demographic is not right or they didn't settle in sufficient numbers during the 70.s 80's 90's as they did eslewhere because of the troubles.

We were stopping in the Premier in in the Cathedral area last November when a viable car bomb was left in the entrance to the underground car park in that very respectable new Victoria shopping centre off Victoria street.

Seemed quite surreal watching it all unfold on the TV just around the corner knowing we had walked past the place the previous evening. I of course have visited Belfast before although not for many years. Despite all this I found it a polar opposite in the centre of the city to what it was back then.

We even did the open top bus tour round the Shankill, down the Falls Rd and the loyalist lodge areas where they still paint the lampposts and kerbstones red white and blue. Titanic was the purpose of the visit though and the boss really enjoyed it.

Off topic: An interesting comment about the Titanic geezer, I went the year before last and I found the Titanic a totally disappointing experience. The building looks impressive but I think the much smaller Titanic museum down on Cork is far better.
We did the Shankill/Falls Rd. tour in a black cab and went into the Sinn Fein office/bookshop on the Falls Road. What I hadn't appreciated is that the streets are so close together!

We walked across from the hotel taking in the whole district. I already had researched the area on the web and had a good feel for the whole Harland and Wolff yard so we saw the dry docks and the tenders ect. We even walked up to and partly round the new TV studios on part of the old shipyard where they film 'Game of Thrones'.

Seeing the building and assessing the cost £18ish each if memory serves me right I thought I would be disappointed but surprisingly I wasn't. I thought it good value for money and the exhibition spaces detailing how Belfast became the shipbuilding city it was right through to the building and eventual loss of Titanic kept me occupied and engaged for the full two hours it took us to walk round.

Drove up to the Devils causeway and found that good as well one day another we tipped down to Dundalk for a bit of lunch (mistake and you can see the poverty the EU bankers have wrought as soon as you get over the border).

Interesting stuff, as although I am in Belfast and across NI regularly, I have been there as a tourist yet. I might try and get there later in the year
