BENEFIT cheats will be stripped of their high-value possessions under a new Government welfare crackdown launched last night.

Bailiffs are to be sent to the homes of fraudsters to confiscate cars, TVs, games consoles, music systems and other expensive goods in the blitz by the Department for Work and Pensions.
The department’s debt recovery teams are being given sweeping new powers to gain access to the credit records of convicted benefit fraudsters to find out what assets they have purchased.
The investigators can then send in the bailiffs to grab the items.
Official figures show that around £1.2billion was estimated to have been lost to benefit fraud last year.
Ministers are determined to do more to get that money back.
They want to send a clear message that benefit claimants risk losing their prized possessions if they rip off the taxpayer.

Welcoming the proposals, Tory MP Nigel Mills, who is on the Commons’ Work and Pensions Committee, said: “Benefit fraud is a serious offence.
“Those found guilty should be given a robust punishment and it is clearly right that their assets be used to refund the taxpayer for the benefits that should never have been paid.
“These rules need to be applied more rigorously to benefit cheats and other criminals alike so it’s clear that crime won’t pay.”
