This article is reporting that the coming changes to Working Tax Credit changes are "unfair" :

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... -dole.html

This sentence sets the outrage:
Quote:
Hundreds of thousands of families face having their income slashed by thousands of pounds due to cuts to tax credits, according to official figures.

This sentence explains the current situation:
Quote:
At the moment couples with children can qualify for £3,870 Working Tax Credit if they work at least 16 hours a week.

This sentence mentions the changes from April:
Quote:
But from April 6 this is increasing to 24 hours a week.

HMRC explains the changes from April:
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxcreditsbudget/index.htm#2

Quote:
Couples with children - new working hours rules for Working Tax Credit
At the moment, if you're responsible for at least one child and working at least 16 hours a week, you can get Working Tax Credit.
From 6 April 2012, the rules for couples with at least one child are changing. In most cases, to qualify for Working Tax Credit your joint working hours will need to be at least 24 a week.
This will mean:
if you both work your joint weekly hours must be at least 24, with one of you working at least 16 hours a week
if only one of you works, that person must be working at least 24 hours a week

Note: The changes to the Tax Credit system ONLY apply to couples, NOT SINGLES.

Is it really too much to expect the combined working hours of TWO people to be at least 24 hours per week in order to qualify for tax-payers' handouts?

Is it really unreasonable that if only one person of the couple is working that they should work for at least 24 hours per week in order to qulaify?

Is it really as “unfair” as Yvette Cooper claims it is?

Make it three and I would agree. If it is only paid for two then you risk a declining population and need even more immigrants ! Quebec even increased the baby bonus rate for third and subsequent children to increase their birth rate yet still need immigrants to keep the population stable.

Like the USA system where many states welfare is only paid for the children in the family after 9 months on benefits; any more and they are not covered by the working taxpayers !

Let's not even look at the Chinese legal one child limit system where they have a diminishing and aging work force with an out of whack ratio of male to female babies surviving. Visited there just before the olympics and our male guides were resigned to bachelorhood although being among the highly educated and high earning men.
