My niece is trainging to be a primary school teacher and was really looking forward to her first week in a classroom. She was excited to be posted to a school with an outstanding Ofsted rating in a nice area. However, things are not going well.

Within her first couple of days she was told off for trying to help a 5 year old put his shoes on round the right way; he put them on the wrong feet and she was prevented from intervening. The child was left to walk off with his shoes on the wrong feet. She was also told off for correcting a spelling and prevented from intervening to help a child who was putting his jumper on back to front.

This lunacy is probably why the school gets good Ofsted reports.

How stupid, unbelievable. So what happened to the idea that when your at school in the early years your teacher did motherly duties.

I wonder what the reasoning behind letting kids walk round potentially damaging their feet is.

The reason she was given is they have to learn independence . I'm all for that but within reason and I also believe teachers are there to teach!

My daughter is in her Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) year as a mathematics teacher in a secondary school. She is a mature woman with 2 teenage children of her own. She holds an honours degree in mathematics and computing science. She previously led an engineering software team producing mathematical models for a well known government organisation. She is currently teaching mathematics to first year entry students right through to GCSE exam year students at age 16 years; this particular school does not have an A Level stream. In the few months she has been teaching the GCSE exam year students at this particular school my daughter she has raised previously 'predicted GCSE grade results' from grades E to C up to to predicted B to A* grades, with the majority of predicted grades being grade A.

My daughter was recently reprimanded for being 'too close' to her exam year students. “Too close “ means spending additional time with her students outside of class time, at break times, dealing with various difficulties some of her students have with mathematics. She has students regularly telling her she is the best mathematics teacher they have ever had in their school.

Currently, there is such a desperate shortage of appropriately qualified teachers to teach mathematics in schools up to GCSE and A Level standards that when my daughter was seeking a teaching post last year she had schools phoning her and begging her to attend interviews. Now it seems that the aim is to demotivate and discourage new teachers at an early stage in their teaching careers.

Even while currently in post at a school as an NQT, my daughter recently received an email from another school asking her to apply for a maths teaching post – I think that smacks of desperation. Needless to say, my daughter will be looking for another post as soon as she completes her NQT year.

I think I read somewhere that 50% of new teachers give up teaching within 5 years. Not surprised.

I suspect that is the behind-the-scenes plan. Make a pretence of raising standards of education whilst doing everything to undermine schools and children's' education. Result: a dumbed down population that can't think or reason for itself.

Or an environment where gifted pupils are not allowed to excel above the 'accepted standard'. Otherwise why restrict teachers giving the best extra tuition?

We are dropping down the global academia levels due to this stupid 'leave them to fend for themselves' attitude. I just don't understand it.

Look at all those left wing students in Rotherham last week which barricaded Farage inside the local office.

They couldn't even get the spelling right on their placards......
