Anyone wondering about the huge plume of smoke coming from the Harrow/Wembley direction, it's a fire in Perivale http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/pe ... ws-6003120 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... blaze.html |

Can I guess at somebody doing something they shouldn't have been, as is often the case. Looks nasty though and will take some time to rebuild. |

Its sad to see a nice bit of art deco industrial heritage being destroyed in such a manner. I am sure a nice set of cheap steel frame and sheet clad warehouses (or flats!!) will be up in no time, but it wont be the same. Fires during out of working hours in buildings during hot weather can often result in a rapidly developing fire as so many fire doors will be edged open to help make the workplace environment more bearable. Of course I have no idea if thats the case here, but it does seem to have got going very rapidly and kicked out a fair bit of smoke Attachment:

Just came down the A40 from London and a light grey column of smoke is still rising. Two fire engines seemed to be topping up their tanks from a hydrant in front of the Hoover building. |

Incredible picture SOT! I've seen one posted from Charville Lane too. It seems to have been visible over a vast radius. |

I would be surprised if they are topping u their tanks to use on the Perivale fire. Damping down and firefighting would involved 100s of thousands of liters of water and a LFB pump only carries around 1350 litres. I would not be surprised if the fire appliances were pumping from a biggish water main on the A40 and via large diameter hose to the scene. This is the second large fire in Perivale in 2/3 weeks. A fire in a yard which damaged vehicles and buildings occurred a fortnight or so ago - around the same time of day - and I could clearly see it from Heathrow. I wonder if there's any connection? |

I think you're probably right as it seemed not far away. |

I went past on the coach at 5.15 this morning and the fire brigade are still outside the Hoover building pumping along large diameter hoses, so they were still putting 1000s of litres a minute on the fire |
