Morally Repugnant Osborne said did he not?

Quote:
When George Osborne attacked tax avoiders as morally repugnant last March, he must have thought this would bring him easy political gains.

It has not worked out quite like that. Rather a lot of Tory donors and sympathisers have turned out to be tax avoiders.

And some major companies seem to be able to persuade Revenue officials to interpret their tax liabilities quite generously.

Meanwhile, it is painfully obvious that Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs are simply not very good at combating the increasingly ingenious schemes of tax avoidance experts.

This is especially annoying to normal taxpayers, who never dream of tax avoidance, yet find HMRC hot on their trail, suspicious and demanding, even when they try to submit accurate and timely tax returns.

The sneering remark of the American hotel magnate Leona Helmsley that ‘only little people pay taxes’ seems to be coming true here as well.

Now, thanks to Channel 4’s Dispatches programme, we learn that members of HMRC’s board have links to companies which themselves face suggestions that they engage - quite legally - in tax avoidance

Who is surprised?

60% of HMRC's own buildings are also managed by a private contractor called Mapeley who's assets are held in Bermuda so they avoid paying UK tax - what a complete joke.

To cut costs, Revenue & Customs signed a deal with an offshore firm that has now avoided paying millions of pounds in tax

Quote:
Senior revenue and customs officials appeared before the public accounts committee today to be told that their department scored a "massive own goal" by using an offshore company to manage its properties.

In 2001 the Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise, later merged to form HMRC, signed a 20-year contract with Mapeley STEPS Contractor Ltd, handing over ownership and management of 60% of HMRC properties to the private contractor.

Lesley Strathie, chief executive of HMRC, told the public accounts committee she is not embarrassed by the deal, despite the fact that Mapeley avoids paying UK tax by holding its assets in Bermuda.

Then back at the coal face we have....

Quote:
Nightclubs in Scotland, hair salons in Northern Ireland and car salesmen in Yorkshire are among the latest targets of tax investigators as HMRC continues its crackdown on small business tax dodgers.

HM Revenue & Customs has identified the professions as high-risk and will send specialist teams to visit traders to examine their records and carry out other investigations.

Ever felt you have just been done over? Well you have big time!! Nailing those that don't have the resources to defend themselves properly seems to be the order of the day.

If only all these car salesmen and pub landlords could take HMRC's boss out for lunch to sort it our out amicably, eh? A system with no integrity fosters a culture of criminality on all sides

It has always been the same, One set of rules and regulations for some, and a whole new ballpark for the rest of us, but no Governments in the past have said leave it to us, and we will sort it, and this one will be no different, with one set of rules for the masses, another set for the ruling elite. ;) ;)

Osborne's “morally repugnant tax avoiders” was always going to come back and bite him. It is also possible that Osborne’s attack on Ed Balls last week over the LIBOR fiddle could come back and bite him and his party. Osborne gives all the signs of being a lot less bright than he likes to think he is. A self-deluded incompetent comes close to describing Osborne, as it does for most of this Government.

The truth is, this present Government is more morally repugnant than any previous Government. It's worse than the Blair/Brown Government because this lot promised to clean up politics and the whole system of administration. The Tories campaigned on a “Vote for Change, vote Conservative” slogan; and when they failed to win the election they jumped into bed with the dubious Lib Dems, supposedly to form a government in the “national interest” of dealing with the debt crisis.

Not only is the national debt increasing at an alarming rate, but now this Government of “national interest” flies the rainbow flag above Government buildings, in support of “Gay Pride”. This Government is now intending to push through a bill redefining marriage in favour of homosexuals. This Government's priorities appear to be the destruction of everything that is opposed to the common good. This Government wilfully permits the national debt to spiral out of control, whilst regularly devaluing the pound by printing bank loads of duff cash. At the same time this Government panders to the perverse, whilst increasing taxes on the vulnerable.

“Morally repugnant” is too light a description for this Government; positively evil would be a closer description.

I heard Betty Boothroyd on R4 Today program this morning ripping into the Governments bill reference reform of the Lords. I must say what she said made a lot of sense......

I say the Governments bill when in reality it is the Lib Dems bill holding a gun at Camerons head.

The Lords is a very good revising chamber, it doesn't need any more powers not does it need less powers, it works brilliantly as it is.. Maybe some of the personalities should change with ordinary people allowed to participate on an expenses only basis. I am sure some sort of method of choosing who these people should be could be found if the powers to be put their heads together.

There are far more important things for this Government to be tackling than Lords reform or Gay marriage!! We are about to slide in abyss mark2 and all they do is faff about at the edges..

I agree. Reform of the Lords is another unnecessary and unwanted change, especially when there are so many more serious issues for Government and Parliament to attend to at this time.

Lords reform and the redefining of marriage equate to giving a haircut to a patient who is bleeding to death from a serious wound to the lower half of the body. If something serious isn't done very soon to address the moral decline and the national debt, then there will be no need for politically driven changes, because uncontrolled events will take over.
