A feature of every Promenade Concert at the Royal Albert Hall is The Shout. Groups of (usually) young people would loudly chant something in unison. They would gather near the front of the arena or somewhere in the gallery, and there would often be a shouted conversation from one to the other. You would hear "Gallery to Arena" and a question would be asked, to be followed by "Arena to Gallery" and a reply would come. The most common Shout would be the "Heave!" as the lid of tthe piano was raised. At one concert I managed to be fairly close to the front of the arena, and while the place was filling up I could see words being passed among the crowd in front and then they all chanted: "Hullo, Mum, have you found out yet who Dad is?" I'm sure I didn't mis-hear it. |
