Just looked at the Met Office weather gadget. The picture is reminiscent of a few weeks ago as a storm is currently over Devon and Cornwall and heading our way :o

Well one of them worked ? I can see it on the previous page, I'll have another go later.

What an awful day this is after the crisp clear days of the last week or so. I don't have a way of recording my local stats ever since my neighbours' cats trashed my back garden weather station ( ), but I would hazard a guess that local rainfall totals are in the region of 2.5cms ( 1" ) already, with more to come.

Once the main band of rain has passed through later today the potential is there for some hefty showers to follow, and I wouldn't rule out the odd rumble of thunder and hail in amongst it all. The South Coast will probably see the worst of it as a cold mid-level air mass interacts with relatively warm surface sea temperatures ( SST's ) in the English Channel.

The weekend should see a slow and gradual improvement, and I'll be looking at that in more detail later.

In the meantime, thanks as always for reading and posting. Moley 8-)

Living at the south coast and being blown around at the moment what a great photo which I recognise as the Fishing Fleet in Hastings and the 3 lovley days we had this week with Blue Skies and wonderful deep orange/red sunsets. Hard to beleive how fast and dramatically changable the weather is.

I thought you would recognise the photo Bucks ! I will try and post some more here once I get the hang of it.

The rain has finally eased off here, but the winds are picking up from a south easterly direction. Recorded gusts already in excess of 45mph along the South Coast, and suprisingly strong here in in north west London. Batten down the hatches.

Good luck to anyone wishing to download jimroslings free dvd's !! I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

So, the weather prospects for the next few days then ?

This morning ( Saturday ) has seen us off to a fairly bright start in London and most of The South East, the exception being the South Coast where one or two showers have cropped up along the English Channel.

The rest of today looks like continuing in a similar vein, with inland areas remaining mostly dry and occasional showers the further south you are. Maximum temperatures in the region of 10-11c ( 50-52f ). SUNDAY should again remain mostly dry inland during daylight hours, but there is an increasing chance of rain overnight into the early hours of MONDAY morning. Maximum temperatures 9-10c (48-50f ).

Into the working week, MONDAY could see further showers developing in the afternoon, and temperatures are edging downwards. Maximums of around 7-8c ( 45-47f ). TUESDAY is showing signs of a Low Pressure System to our South, and if it materializes we could be in for some further heavy rainfall with maximum temperatures falling to around 6-8c ( 42-47f ). WEDNESDAY......wet and windy afternoon ?

With the Atlantic zonality pretty much in control for the forseeable future its difficult to predict much beyond 2-3 days, but the outlook is definately unsettled and becoming cooler into next week. All subject to change at short notice of course !

A little later than I predicted ( by about 12-18 hours ) but South Western and Southern coastal regions reported some impressive downpours, thunderstorms and hail from around midday Sunday, and later in the afternoon some of these storms made their way further inland. Wembley is the nearest confirmed report I can see for the London area. Most of the activity was along the South Coast from Hampshire eastwards.

Quite unusual conditions for December, but as I suggested a couple of posts ago, these storms were triggered by a cold mid-level air mass passing over the relatively warm English Channel. A classic case of the right ingredients, in the right place at the right time, and extremely difficult to pinpoint more than a few hours out.

Next week is still looking unsettled, particularly towards midweek, but perhaps not quite as chilly as I first thought.

I hope you all enjoyed your weekend whatever the weather, and thanks as always for reading and posting. Moley 8-)

Just a quick update from me here in Soggy Sussex tonight.

It really is looking quite grim for much of the West Country between now and Christmas Eve with some forecasts suggesting a further 3-5 inches of rain for some parts of that region over the next 4-5 days. Further flooding is a very real concern now, especially in areas still mopping up from the November floods.

London and The South East will also see a good deal of rain during this time, and localised flooding could be a problem here as well.

Here on The South Coast the rain didn't get going until early afternoon, but nothing too serious, its the conveyor belt of moist rain laden air coming up from the Bay of Biscay we need to keep an eye on. This is making its way to our region overnight tonight ( Wednesday ) and into Thursday, and could give some prolonged spells of heavy rain for a good few hours.

Friday may see a brief respite of sorts, before the next onslaught heads our way late Friday night and through much of Saturday, based on current models. I will try and take a more detailed look at things when time allows. In the meantime it is adviseable to listen out for local forecasts on the tv and radio, and perhaps keep an eye out for Environmental Agency warnings/alerts.

Be safe. Moley :(
