Sorry Jane, but no rain means more fireworks I suspect. The last of the rain belt has also now cleared the far South East and South Coast, so the whole of our region should enjoy a dry countdown to midnight.

Well we didn't escape the fireworks :( But around 2am the heavens opened and I couldn't help but laugh as I watched some very drunk youngsters get a soaking :)

I don't remember it as I was only 3 .... but my mum told us how bad it was. We moved house early that year and she said it was awful. Didn't it go on until about April ??

As far as London and most of The South East was concerned Jane I think the worst of it was over by mid to late February 1963.

Considering the 'Big Freeze ' began on Boxing Day 1962, thats an awful long time in the freezer !!

***UPDATED DECEMBER 31ST 2012 @ 16:30 Hrs***

...........Signs are that the southern half of the UK should remain mostly dry for the next 5-7 days once this last rain band has cleared off into Europe tonight. It won't be particularly sunny, anything but most of the time, but it should stay fairly mild for a few days at least, with a hint of fog and frost towards next weekend. This pattern could well remain into the 2nd week of January 2013, and its then we MAY start to see something a little more wintry.............

Just a quick update from me since I posted this on New Years Eve. The outlook is still pretty much the same with the southern half of the country remaining mostly dry, but I think the risk of fog and frost by the weekend is diminishing. In fact this weekend could see some very mild temperatures, 14-15c ( 57-59f ). Nothing like Southern Australia is currently experiencing though.

48.1c ( 118.5f ) is the highest reported temperature I can find there so far.

Back to our little island, and there are increasingly strong signals for a notable change to occur in our weather later this month. A phenomenon known as Sudden Stratospheric Warming ( SSW ) is currently underway, and it may well impact on our weather in the second half of this winter.

Its something I will try and keep a close watch on, but be prepared for a cold snap around mid January.

***UPDATED MONDAY JANUARY 7TH 2013 @ 21:00 Hrs***

As we edge nearer the time I indicated above ( Mid January ) all the current signs are that here in London and The South East we could indeed be heading for a cold snap.

Lets look at the rest of this week first though, and it looks as though the High Pressure which has been responsible for a dry but cloudy and fairly mild start to The New Year is beginning to drift away. Heathrow has recorded no sun whatsoever since January 3rd. :( Im not convinced we will see too much in the way of sunshine in the next few days either, but there is an increased risk of rain this week. Most likely between Tuesday and Thursday. Wednesday is the most likely day for sunny intervals. Temperatures will remain above average for this time of year at around 9-11c ( 48-52f ).

The weekend could see the first signs of a change as we draw in colder air from a northerly source, and by Sunday/Monday we should be feeling a noticeable difference. With a north easterly, then easterly wind developing, showers developing over The North Sea may well turn wintry in our region.

The likeliehood of snow is all but impossible to predict for our temperate climate more than a few hours out, but I would not be at all suprised if some locations receive at least a dusting of snow a week or so from now.

Thanks for reading and posting. Moley 8-)
