Raf Northolt today recorded its coldest and warmest temperatures of the month so far, in the space of 8 hours.

7am -3.9c
3pm 10.8c

In fact I wouldn't be at all suprised if that is the coldest of the year so far. Another useless and boring weather fact bought to you by Moley

I have to say the recent sunshine has been a very welcome arrival though, and no doubt some folks thoughts have been turning to Spring. Well you can rely on me to put the dampers on that because the continental anticylonic gloom is looming towards us from the east even as I type. It will look and feel like a cold, grey blanket has been pulled over London and The South East for the next few days I fear.

I think WEDNESDAY will see the last of any decent sunshine, and daytime temperatures will be down on todays values as cloud encroaches. Daytime maximums of 2-4c ( 36-39f ) are likely from THURSDAY and into the weekend. On the plus side the cloud cover should prevent any severe frost forming, but nightime temperatures will be close to, or just below 0c (32f ).

Snow risk is back to low again for much of our region, a few flakes here and there perhaps, with the east being most at risk.

As always, thank you for reading and posting. Moley 8-)

That's interesting. I must admit, it was SO COLD on the way home from work this morning (Wed) that I coudn't imagine how on earth it was going to turn out to be the pleasantky warm day which had been forecast.

Thanks for posting Jon and Im glad someone found it interesting !

For our region Northolt came out 3rd overall for temperature extremes on Feb 19th as far as I can see:

Farnbororough ( Hampshire ) -4.6c to 11.2c (15.8c change )

Charlwood ( Surrey ) -4.1c to 11.2c ( 15.3c change )

Northolt ( Greater London ) -3.9c to 10.8c ( 14.7c change )

There have been far greater temperature swings recorded in the past, but these usually occur in Spring and Autumn, so I thought it worth a mention. Just dont expect any warming influence from the sun in the next few days !!

I noted on BBC teletext weather yesterday evening that we were surrounded by forecasted light snow on Saturday. This morning, no snow forecast.

Works for me :)

Thats the nature of the beast Kremmen, and why its all but impossible to reliably pinpoint and forecast snow on our tiny island more than a few hours out. It will change again a good many times between now and Saturday, believe me.

The colder Continental air has now arrived in London and The South East, following behind a weak Cold Front which passed through earlier today. Winds are now taking a more easterly direction meaning it will feel rather uncomfortable for the next few days, and often cloudy.

The potential for any snow is dependant on any instability which MAY occur roughly to our east, and be blown inland by the winds. Currently there are signs the winds may turn more east/north easterly towards the weekend, hence the slight snow risk for Saturday. Those winds will be travelling over a wider expanse of the North Sea, increasing the chances of instability for our region.

Good grief 'ark at me waffling on. I'm putting it down to a combination of old age and strong medication, and that would explain some of my earlier posts where for some reason I thought this coming weekend was the beginning of March. My apologies for the confusion. I'm going for a lay down now.

Moley :?

NB: In a nutshell the outlook for the next few days is cold, mostly cloudy with a slight/moderate risk of snow flurries. Thank you and goodnight. ;)

As I see it the Azors high that is normal around this time of year starting to build, is way off coarse and is nearer Norway than the Azors, bringing up weather patterns from eastern Europe, rather than the Atlantic, and believe it will be later rather than sooner, getting back on song, may even last into part two of March, I am no pundit on weather other than day to day, but do remember 1948 that saw a very cold winter, and a very hot summer the last time we held the Olyimpic Games in this Country. :o ;)

Welcome aboard and thanks for posting Jim.

Can I just say on that subject, everyone is more than welcome to post their thoughts, comments and observations. They are very much appreciated. Thank you.

Jim you make a very good point about the Azores High as it does tend to build as we head towards Spring, but much further south. Currently there is a weak High Pressure system in the Atlantic, but much closer to the equator than it is to the Azores and the Iberian peninsular.

The High Pressure system we are currently under the influence of is a different kettle of fish altogether. Its a classic 'Scandinavian High' , and its fairly common in winter. The High Pressure to our north east, and the Low Pressure over the near continent is whats forcing the colder air over us at the moment, but I think it will be fairly short lived.

I will try and go into more detail later, but thanks again for posting Jim ( and of course everyone else )

Move along now folks, nothing to see here !!

Apart from a few flakes every now and then London and The South East remained pretty much snow free over the weekend in terms of anything settling.

The remainder of this week looks pretty miserable to be honest, with grey skies being the main feature. Temperatures have risen a degree or two, and are likely to stay in the region of 4-6c ( 39-42f ) for most of the week during 'daylight' hours. Any precipitation will almost certainly be rain.

This is my least favourite time of year, not least because it quite often delivers the worst kind of weather. In days gone by when I was fortunate enough to be able travel to much warmer climes, it would invariably be about now.

Moley :(
