Changes to the benefit system:

At present if you are sick you get incapacity benefit and possibly disability living allowance if told about it. If you are sick and have few savings, you may also get income support. The local authority awards council tax and housing benefit.

The interim reform is to replace the income support and incapacity benefit with a varying rate of employment and support allowance. This then moves to a universal credit with DLA being replaced by a personal independence payment.

If you feel better under the old system you could work part time up to 16 hours and keep your earnings up to £90 approx. Or you could study part time and get a fee loan only.

However if you were to study full time you might lose your benefits as the maintenance loan replaces it.

You are entitled to ask for charitable donations from grant awarding bodies to supplement the social fund to get appliances or grants for fitting out your accommodation as well as for postgraduate fees.
