The signing issue is an indication that SA is going Banana Republic!!

Somehow a bogus agency was able to place that idiot in front of the Worlds media doing a bogus job no doubt for a considerable fee.

Someone in the SA government was in on it!!

I'm not convinced that was the case SOT. It seems quite likely he was merely a fake or a fraud. Seems quite appropriate given some of the 'world leaders' he was supposedly signing for. Something in common there perhaps ?

What a sad state of affairs.

In the meantime BBC1 are giving a full 5 hours of live coverage to 'Nelson Mandela: The Funeral' from 5:30-10:30am on Sunday morning. I mean no disrespect but WHY for heavens sake ? A brief section in the news bulletins should suffice surely ?

I have a fundamental problem with this.

At least with Sky, Virgin, BT and all the various other tv media outlets I have a choice of subscribing and watching or not. I used to have Sky, but ditched it through choice. It seems I have no such choice with the BBC.

Even when I had no tv for several years I was regularly hounded and threatened by the tv licensing people. Well my tv is going now and they can hound me again all they want because they have absolutely no authority to enter a property.

^^^ Thanks for the link Geezer466. I will be registering my complaint. It's not a case of filling my boots though. Personally it's just a growing sense of anger that the government and the bbc are so out of touch with the very people who pay them.

Moley, The TV in my house hasn't been used for well over six months now, and the effect on our lives is quite staggering. At first we missed having the 'box' on, but now we don't even think about it. The approach to Christmas has been a real joy this year without all the TV hype and adverts that would normally have assaulted our minds. We are no longer fed endless politically correct clap-trap, some of which would have normally resulted in the TV being immediately switched off because it was so disgusting. I think we are better informed now concerning what is going on in the world because we are now more particular about which news sources we access. And two big pluses: one, I don't pay for the corrupting BBC any more; and two, our electricity bill has noticeably reduced since the TV has been permanently off air. And - I now spend far more time reading again since the distration of the TV is no longer there. It really is a win-win-win situation.

^^^ Iv'e been without a tv in the past Westonman and to be honest didn't miss it all back then. Different situation now though so I will miss it for the few programmes I do watch and enjoy, but they are not worth the enforced license fee that's for sure.

Moley, You are probably aware that you may be able to watch the programs you enjoy on your computer for free, providing you don't watch them as they are being broadcast live. The law surrounding TV sets, when you can and can't watch a program, is quite ludicrous. The broadcasters themselves assist their own downfall by willingly providing their broadcasts over the internet via iPlayer etc. and for a considerable period of time after the live broadcast, in many cases up to 28 days. The real surprise is that so many of us continue to pay the TV tax; especially since the majority of people have become conditioned to watching their favourite programs after the event anyway through the widespread use of TV recorders. Why waste money on a recorder when you can watch for free via the internet, at a time of your convenience?

Most modern TVs have multiple inputs, enabling a computer, or even an Ethernet connection from a broadband router, to be connected directly into the TV. Current technology is working against the BBC TV licence, and we should be exploiting the technology to our benefit.

I am probably telling you what you already know. But you don't need a TV licence to own a TV set. You only need to pay the licence if you watch programs live, as they are being broadcast, or you use a TV recorder to record programs from a live broadcast.

You do not have to answer any questions when the TV inspectors come round: they come looking for you to provide them with the evidence to prosecute you. Tell them nothing, admit to nothing, and there is nothing they can do. You are not even obliged to answer the door to them when they come knocking. They need us to give them the evidence of supposed guilt to enable them to apply to a court for a search warrant. No evidence, means no search warrant, means no further action.

The best part is, instead of funding the dodgy BBC you will be incurring them in additional expense by wasting their time and money paying people to act as spies and evidence gatherers. If you reach the point where you become tired of them knocking on your door, send to TVLA by registered post, a letter issuing a Withdrawal Of Implied Right Of Access to your property, and request a written receipt of your letter by return of post. That should stop them.
