Just to update.....after yet another long and protracted phone call with McAfee they have apologised profusely and have agreed to cancel my subscription and refund me in full. So far so good, but then they sent me an e-mail requesting my bank details and asking me to fill in a form giving IBAN number and SWIFT codes ( whatever they are ), and that apparently requires me to download the form from sources I have never heard of.

Given the already serious breach of data I am extremely reluctant to do this.

Never ever believe what a salesman tells you. Particularly those in Curry's/PC World..

Draw your own conclusions.

All operating system types are at risk of some nastyness. Virus and malware are just code the same as any other program such as the software which drives this forum. It is called a virus or trojan or malware because on the nasty things it can do or your use PC and it's internet connection to do.

Windows have probably 90% of the worldwide market therefore quid pro quo suggests that 90% of the nastyness will be windows targeted.

Any operating system can be at risk from a virus but linux products less so for two reasons.

Firstly it is not that widely used (as yet but is becoming more popular) and secondly the way it installs itself means it pretty much automatically disables the admin account. The install software you will always have to go SUDO and enter passwords, nothing is done automatically even updates to the operating system. Therefore it is much harder for nasties to get onto these type of systems.

The not so widely used also applies to Apple and Android but as they become more mainstream more nasty stuff will target them.

Windows machines with their users almost by default will use the admin account as most cannot be bothered to introduce individual users without admin rights.

Does this also apply to both the iPhone and the iPad. Can they get contaminated?

Mcafee use to be great in the early days, the best product on the market. However, it al started to go wrong the more it tried to do and eventually most of my RAM was taken up with its operation. I deleted my auto-subscription but Mcafee reinstated and took my money without permission. I threatened them with legal proceedings and they returned my money and gave me another year subscription. I moved over to Apple 3yrs ago and it's been great and I do have anti-virus from Kaspersky, free from Barclays and never had an issue. For my home use, I will not look at a Microsoft machine again.

Anything can get contaminated is someone can be bothered to write malicious code for it.

If malicious code for example was written to the chip on the board which runs your washing machine it could be made to run backward and other weird stuff. As your machine never connects to the internet there is no danger of the firmware being over written.

It's all a matter of risk.

If you use your ipad for a bit of web surfing, bbc iplayer and the stuff you probably have nothing to worry about. Even online banking provided you are always sure of the website you are entering your password into, (never opening unexplained attachments in emails).

If you are constantly visiting porn sites (I am sure you are not) and downloading the software (malware) they want you too you will run into problems.

A lot of the banking scams involve an email from what looks like your bank (but isnt). It asks you to open an attachment or click a spurious link to login. So long as you treat everything with suspicion and take nothing for granted you should be fine.

IBAN and Swift codes are ok they are like Bank Sort codes but used on the international stage..

I often have to use them for paying money to foreign accounts, Even had money paid to me from Eire where i had to supply the codes.

They will also probably need your account number. Nothing really to be worried about.

One thing with that McAfee purchase - make sure your not on one of those very expensive annual auto renewal jobs if you paid with your credit card.

I know Norton will charge anything up to £70 for a renewal but you can buy a new boxed copy from Smiths for £20 - £25 each year.

I have been told, the more security systems you use on one computer weakens the systems, I am no expert but it does seem to make sense, I get the cheapest Norton disc from Wal-mart about $30 once year and use the same one for mine and daughters, never have any problems.

PC Security:

Norton, Kaspersky, BitDefender (paid for)
AVG, Microsoft Security Essentials (free - not as good but does the job)

MalWareBytes Free- Don't run this in active mode alongside your regular AV (as mentioned above in the multiple usage warning). Just use it as a second line of defence by running it each day you use your PC.

CCleaner - Not really security but will remove all those Cookies, temp files and muck that builds up.

Browsers - Look for and install AdBlock Plus, Browser Protect (stops your homepage being changed without your permission) and DoNotTrackMe

SyncBackFree - perform automatic backups of your data. Also use a detachable (portable) external hard drive and only connect it for manual backups.

Secunia Personal Security Inspector (PSI) - This will inspect your programs and advise if any are out of date and thus a potential security risk.

And finally, if you don't recognise an email and it has a link, just bin it, and remember no real institutions ask you for any personal info in emails.
