I was tracking the rain online and at times it was showing as raining round here but looking out of the window told a different story

The rainfall radar can often be deceptive, especially at this time of year. It's not unusual for the rain to evaporate before it hits the ground. I think this was the case yesterday in many places.

I'm still unsure about the prospects for this weekend, but I don't hold out too much hope in the way of sunshine and warm temperatures.

Next week is showing some signs of an improvement though as an Azores high tries to build across southern England. If it materializes we could well see a few days of increasingly warm weather before the inevitable threat of a thundery breakdown occurs towards next weekend.

At first glance that may appear to be an epic fail on my part but further investigation confirms a wide variation in conditions across our region again today.

Among the most notable were Langdon Bay, Kent.....shrouded in cloud/mist recording a maximum of just 16.7c (63f) and Heathrow mostly sunny, recording 27.6c ( 82f ). Some you win, some you lose.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend folks. Moley 8-)

Just a quick update from me this evening.

It seems the earlier Met Office warnings of thunderstorms breaking out in our region this evening are proving to be accurate according to actual reports I am seeing. Areas to the east and north of London most at risk, but storms have also been reported from Kent and South East London in the last hour or so.

No pops and bangs noticed here.

What I did notice yesterday though was that it was flying ant day, hundreds of the little things :(

^^ Yes indeed, the flying ants were out in force on Saturday. I seem to recall reading somewhere they only live for one or two days. can anyone enlighten me on that please ?

Looking at the week ahead it seems the heat is on as I mentioned in an earlier post, but fairly short lived as a thundery low from the near continent threatens by the end of the week. Between now and then we may well record the highest temperature of the summer so far, possibly 30c ( 86f ) inland. Refreshingly cooler on coasts though.

The heat will be accompanied by increasing humidity leading to quite uncomfortable overnight temperatures, similar to the overnight minimum of 17c ( 63F ) at Raf Northolt overnight this last Saturday/Sunday.

Overall the outlook for this week is fairly typical for a British summer in our region, but I will try and keep a close watch on the potential for severe weather as we head towards next weekend.

Yes, I spotted that daily temp rise coming this week. Main problem is shifting the heat overnight as it refuses to budge. I've even got a 6" stay on a hinged loft hatch on the understanding that heat rises and my loft has ventilated ridge tiles.

Doesn't seem to work though :(

That's not a bad idea Kremmen. Another tip I was given and which works for me, is to lightly spray your duvet cover/sheet with water about half an hour before going to bed. Sounds uncomfortable but in fact is the opposite for anyone who struggles to sleep when the mercury rises.

There is a lot of chatter on weather websites about the prospects for an outbreak of quite severe thunderstorms as we head towards next weekend, and as previously mentioned it's something I will be keeping an eye on with further updates nearer the time.

Your thoughts, ideas and suggestions invited.

Good morning all, and thanks again to everyone who reads and posts on this topic. Your contributions are very much appreciated.

I am no longer able to research and post as much I would like to, so I would like to expand this thread to new members who share my interest in the weather, and who can add to this forum in a positive way. To do that I would need to send this group the link to it, and I am hoping that will meet with the approval of the Admin here.

Good evening all from a warm and humid Northwood. It's currently 24c ( 75f ) here at 8.30pm and the heat is expected to build further in the next few days. There is a chance that one or two locations may reach 31-32c ( 88-90f ) later this week.

The Met Office seem to be fairly confident of a thundery breakdown by the weekend, and earlier today issued a warning of severe weather for London and the South East on Saturday.

I think there's a reasonable chance that some parts of the UK will see storms before then, with the West Country and Wales seeing a change as early as Thursday. It's could be a busy few days for us weather watchers !!

Thanks for reading. Moley 8-)
