True enough Jon, but September quite often brings a spell of warm and settled weather to our shores and there are tentative signs that this year might see that pattern repeated.

Still a long way off yet in meteorological terms, but I wouldn't bet against some late summer/early autumn sunshine and pleasant conditions in the first week of September at least.

It's interesting how hurricanes which originate thousands of miles away can sometimes have a direct impact on our weather here in the UK further down the line.

Hurricane Bertha was a prime example. As the remnants of Bertha crossed the Atlantic they bought about a noticeable change for the worse here earlier this month. Current hurricane Cristobal looks quite likely to have the opposite effect.

The remnants of Cristobal seem on course to track further north, towards Iceland, causing a ridge of high pressure to form in our general region by the beginning of next week. We may well see a spell of warm and settled weather as a result. It's still far from certain, but I wouldn't be too surprised if we saw temperatures climbing back into the mid 20's C for a while here in London and The South East.

The minimum and maximum temperatures have hovered between 16-19c for the last 19 hours here in Northwood without a hint of sunshine during daylight hours. That suggests to me that we are currently under a blanket of sub tropical air.

According to the BBC it's supposed to be just cloudy by 07:00 and sunshine by 10:00

I'm here with a basket of washing waiting for it to stop drizzling so I can hang it out !

A very brief heads up from me tonight and it's more in the way of a health warning but still weather related.

Despite high pressure remaining close to the UK, daytime and overnight temperatures are expected to drop off in the next few days as we see a more northerly influence taking hold.

The current and ongoing volcanic activity in Iceland is now releasing high levels of sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere, and an invisible cloud of this unpleasant gas may well be heading our way if current forecasts are accurate.

It's nothing to be overly concerned about, but folk with respiratory conditions ( I fall into that category ) may find the next few days rather uncomfortable.

Hasn't rained all week, may have to water the pots later.

It did rain Monday afternoon but I was expecting that because I spent a few hours washing the car on one day of my week off the previous week. Always rains on the first day out after a car wash.

Thanks for the heads up Moley re the volcanic activity

I am a huge Iceland fan (the country, not the shop) and have been there several times. Its the raw beauty and wild geography of the place with makes it so stunning - and on our doorstep

The country suffers around 30 earthquakes a day which are plotted on a website. Since the Bungabunga (or whatever its called) volcano has been playing up, this has rapidly increased. A few days ago, there were 1,500 quakes over two days with around 6 scoring over 3 on the Richter Scale

Over the last few days, things have slowed down a bit. So its interesting you say there are fumes being emitted now. I wonder if there's a connection?

I am going to Cyprus in a couple of weeks on business. I think I might pack a few extra clothes in case I get stuck there for a while. Mind you, that wouldn't be too much of a hardship really!

The weather gods have played ball and delivered what I was suggesting in my above post on August 26th. So far the first 10 days of September have been more like summer than most of August was in our region. What lays ahead though ?

High Pressure looks set to remain in control for some time yet, but the high will be slowly edging north east, introducing a cooler easterly breeze and probably more in the way of cloud to London and the South East as the week progresses. It should remain fairly settled though, with very little if any rainfall for the next few days.

There are some signs that this settled spell may give way to more autumnal weather later next week, but that's still too far off to predict at this stage. In the meantime I hope you all enjoy the last throes of summer 2014

Thanks as always for reading and posting. Moley 8-)

In the unlikely event that anyone is still reading my weather ramblings, there may be a change to unsettled weather towards the middle of next week.
