Brian: Indeed, the bulk of Scotland has been the mildest part of the UK for a number of days now.

Jane: My present thoughts are that London and The South East should see a gradual thaw after a very cold Friday night and daytime Saturday. Sunday should see temperatures slowly rising to around 6-8c for a few days at least.

There is some uncertainty about a cold northerly/north easterly wind bringing snow showers to Eastern coastal areas by midweek, but at this time I have my doubts about that. So for the short term at least, we should remain mostly dry, slightly milder and no further snow for London in the forseeable future. As always though I will try and keep a watch on things and update as and when I can.

Thanks to everyone for reading and posting, and enjoy your weekend. Moley 8-)

Having done a little more research I am becoming a bit nervous about my predictions for milder weather on Sunday and no snow for the forseeable. All credit to Kremm who mentioned Sunday a few posts back.

I still think it will become slightly milder by then, but perhaps not as mild as I first thought. 6-8c is beginning to look a bit optimistic looking at the latest charts.

In the meantime tonight is a cold one and no mistake. Currently -6.4c in Northwood, a reliable -7.9c reported from Watford, and further out, as yet unconfirmed reports of between -10 and -14c in some rural districts of Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and East Anglia.

Rest assured, if I have got my prediction for the next few days badly wrong, I'll put my hands up and admit it.

Moley :(

This morning at 06:00 it was -6.7, it's still -6.4 as I post. If this keeps up I might have to get my long trousers out

Looking at the forecast though, by Monday morning when I next need to venture out it should have warmed up.

Its hard to believe there are some folk still hardy/daft ( or both ) enough to do exactly that at the swimming ponds in Hampstead

'Twas a cold night in much of the south and east last night and no mistake. Here are some of the figures I've seen reported. The ones I've marked ** are official Met Office weather stations. The rest are unofficial but widely confirmed as accurate to within a degree or two.

Chesham: ( Bucks ) -18.3c ( -1f )

Holbeach: ( Lincs ) -15.6c ( 4f ) **

Watford: ( Herts ) -12.6c ( 9f )

Northolt: ( LBH ) -9.7c ( 14f ) **

Northwood: (LBH ) -7.1c ( 19f )

Locations on the coast are usually spared the worst of the cold due to the influence of 'warmer sea temperatures' but even so, overnight temperatures from coastal towns in Sussex, Kent, Essex and East Anglia were widely reported as being between -6 and -10c.

Coningsby in Lincolnshire ** recorded a maximum daytime temperature of -5.3c ( 22f ) today. Northolt** reached the giddy heights of 1.4c ( 35f ). Tonight sees a return of the cold, with a number of places in the South East and East Anglia already below -10c. Where will it all end ?

Well my prediction is sometime Sunday or Monday. A slow moving system is wending its way roughly north to south, and its bringing with it increasing cloud, some rain, some sleet, possibly some snow ( snow most likely in eastern counties ). It should also introduce a gradual increase in temperatures for the next few days at least.

` Global Warming ' sound attractive about now ?
We are enjoying an extremely mild winter so far with temperatures 5 to 10 c above the average for this time of year and no ` normal' temperatures in the forecast.
We also have Hardy souls who go in for ` Polar Bear' charity dips. Emergency crew volunteers chain saw through a foot or so of ice then stand in the water, in dry suits, to grab any one who gets in trouble with the cold water or icy exit grade.
