I walk through Victoria every morning at 06:30 on my way to work and am appalled by the growing homeless crisis.

It's ironic that during the short walk from Victoria station to Whitehall (ie the seat of Govt), I must pass more than 50 rough sleepers of all ages and colours. If I count those sleeping elsewhere on my route to work - say near Marble Arch and in Mayfair's affluent Park Lane, the number is nearer 70 - in the space of 2 miles!!

I quite honestly get a tightening of my stomach when I pass these poor people, especially in this recent weather where groups of homeless have resorted to huddle together. MCDonald's in Victoria St now resembles a soup kitchen around that time as they tuck into some McCrap breakfast.

Still never mind, the 50p tax rate is gunna be cut soon, so at least those living in the expensive flats overlooking these homeless people will be better off :(

Of course they could just up sticks and go home but then the pickings from begging will not be as great!

I don't mean to be so brutal but this problem is not one of the UK governments making, our welfare state is still one of the most generous in the world.

The trouble is this is a well known universal fact across the continent of Europe and people come here thinking they can tap into it in times of hardship.

The truth despite the emails doing the rounds about all and sundry being given benefits and housing as soon as they land is that this does not happen and that these people cannot find work and as such cannot pay for food and shelter.

Yes when families arrive they will be 'catered for' on the basis that we are a caring nation and do not want children to suffer. These people well may be given benefits and shelter but purely in the interests of the kids welfare.

Did the British people ask them to come here?
Were we given a choice of agreeing to the treaty's which allowed this free movement?

No of course we were not and whilst I am sympathetic to their plight I don't see why UK taxpayers funds should go on supporting these people who should go home and tap their own system. Irrespective of who pays a 50p rate or not.

The Romanians (and others) using their kids to beg in central London should be prosecuted for neglect and child abuse (which is what this is) and the children taken off them and placed into care.

I did wonder what it was like in London now Kremmen . It was bad a few years back when I was visiting a hospital on the Edgware Road but from what you say it'ss much worse now :(
Geezer - sadly the benefits system no longer is in place to stop people becoming homeless. Benefits take so long to be processed, sanctions are being placed on people with no warning and without valid reason leaving people with no income. Its a total mess :(

This story introduces an interesting slant on UK unemployment, homelessness, etc. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... 4-000.html
Quote:
]Britain is advertising 250,000 jobs to job seekers in the European Union creating more competition for unemployed people at home.
Around half the jobs advertised on a taxpayer funded EU website are in Britain, raising questions about the government’s approach to unemployment.
By contrast France has advertised just 14,000 posts for other EU workers and seven countries - have put up so few that they do not register with the European Commission’s EURES work programme.

250,000 jobs potentially filled from abroad will have a significant impact on UK unemployment figures, homelessness, and the UK's benefits system.

Never seems to be any shortage of money for this sort of abuse though does there....

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/eu/9971786/Baroness-Ashton-will-be-paid-400000-by-the-EU-to-do-nothing.html

Quote:
Research by The Daily Telegraph has established that the Labour peer, who finishes her job as High Representative of foreign affairs in October next year, will be paid £133,500 a year, 55 per cent of her basic salary, until the end of 2017.

The "transitional allowance" does not require her to do any work at all and she will be paid under reduced rates of EU "community" tax, rather than the standard British rates of taxation for high-income earners.

The disconnect between politicians and the electorate is almost now complete.

No wonder all of them are pro staying in the EU. They can see themselves in similar positions in the future.
