I think expanding Heathrow makes sense. And if Boris thinks the majority of his constituents are opposed he could well be wrong. Ditto John McDonnell.
Majority in Hayes would be against it if it ( it won't of course) came to a referendum. Although I can see the economic benefits they do not outweigh the environmental ones for the local communities.
Lets face it the majority want lox cost air travel provided like Ryanair and Easyjet, just the sort of airlines which will never be allowed to use LHR. The only thing really in it for the locals is the potential for increased jobs.
5 terminals and 3 runways would be 10 terminals and 8 runways 50 years from now at some point the tail starts wagging the dog.
Why should the local people have to suffer noise and breathe bad air to shore up the market positions of a Spanish owned Company like BAA?
Perversely McDonnells best chance of scuppering this plan lies with a Tory Mayor who maybe has designs on 10 Downing Street and his Tory potential replacement. If a Labour mayor is elected then there is every chance it will go ahead....
Edit to add. Strange to see them on the same platform....
