Stubborn cloud cover led to a mild but mostly disappointing weekend for much of London and The South East this weekend. That's one of the drawbacks with High Pressure, it tends to lock in the current weather conditions and if that happens to be cloud then that cloud is going nowhere, especially at this time of year. The sun is just not strong enough to burn the cloud off.

You only had to travel about 30 miles north and east of London today ( Sunday ) to enjoy long spells of sunshine and pleasantly warm temperatures. There are signs of a change to more unsettled weather from around midweek for our region, and I will try and update as and when I can.

Thanks as always for reading and posting. Moley 8-)

Nice to see you posting BG and I would think this weekend saw almost perfect cycling conditions. Congratulations to ( Sir ) Bradley Wiggins on his Tour Of Britain victory.

Near perfect cycling conditions again the weekend just gone BG, no rain, comfortable temperatures and not too windy.

As regular readers of this topic will know I rarely look beyond 3-5 days when I have tried to make my predictions in the past. It's generally accepted amongst us weather enthusiasts as the ' reliable time frame ', but given our unique position of being a tiny island bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and a huge Continent on the other, the term 'reliable' tends to mean very little. Anything beyond 5 days is appropriately known as FI ( Fantasy Island ) !!

I do occasionally have a peek at long term outlooks though and there does seem to be some agreement that the first half of October may stay fairly settled and benign, but as you would expect, the second half of the month shows signs of typical Autumn weather. Atlantic depressions throwing more in the way of rain and occasional gales our way.

The Atlantic Ocean has been noticably quiet this year. particularly in terms of Tropical Storm and Hurricane activity. It has been one of the quietest seasons on record so far, with just one Hurricane recorded up until now. Lets hope it stays that way.

Thanks as always for reading and posting. Moley 8-)

The warning is for Heavy possibly torrential thundery showers, and covers most of the South East and London:

Just an update to my previous post about the Met Office Weather Warning for London and The South East on Thursday October 3rd.

The main threat now seems to have shifted further west, but a second pulse of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms may affect some parts of our region during the afternoon and evening on Thursday.

**Tornado in Galway, Ireland, October 2nd 2013.**

The video quality leaves a bit to be desired but some very reliable sources are fairly confident this event was an actual tornado, as opposed to a funnel cloud, and the footage seems to confirm that.

There are reports of localised damage to properties and it seems the site will be investigated later today ( Thursday ).

As a complete amateur my own thoughts are this was indeed a tornado, and a fairly strong one at that for this region. Whilst not totally unheard of, it's quite rare and is a good indication of just how moist and unstable the atmosphere above the UK and Ireland is at the current time, hence the Met Office warnings.

It's an interesting 24-36 hours ahead for us weather geeks !!
