Rainfall is now beginning to concern me as much as the potential wind strength overnight. Localised flooding could be a problem for the morning commute in some places.

Latest reports from around the weather websites confirm that winds are already gusting over 70mph along the South Coast.

I will try and keep up with developments throughout the night, but once again please tune in to local tv and radio stations for the latest news.

Edited at 01:35 hours. The Met Office have just confirmed a gust of 92mph at the Needles, Isle of Wight.

Hopefully the worst of it is now over. Still blustery but the rain has stopped.

Moley was right again, not as bad as the press would have you believe it was going to be :)

Still another hour or so before the worst is over I'm afraid. Fallen trees are of course the main problem. I hope everyone is safe where you are.

Edit: The maximum wind gusts in the London area seem to have occurred between about 6:30 and 8:00am, and were higher than those I was predicting yesterday.

Heathrow: 69mph

Northolt: 68mph

Blue skies and sunshine here now at 8:20am, and thankfully the winds are rapidly easing.

Top 20 gusts so far today, though this doesn't show the gust of 99mph at the Needles on the IoW and over 100mph+ recorded in the English Channel:

It's at times like this that your weather interest is absolutely vital to us.

Keep it up :D

Thank you for that comment Kremm, and thank you to everyone else who has read and posted on this topic.

The real credit goes to the true experts out there, the professional and amateur meteorologists. I just research all the information available and try and collate and interpret it in a way that I hope is useful. It's just a hobby.

For what it's worth I think the Met Office were absolutely spot on with this particular storm and should be congratulated.

It's quite remarkable to think that the computer models were picking up on the possibilty of this storm developing almost a week ago, 5 or 6 days before it even formed. The accuracy of the predicted strength and path being predicted by the Met Office as early as last Wednesday
is a credit to them.

No sooner than one weather event is over, another one is looming over the horizon. The rest of this week remains unsettled and temperatures down on recent days, but now we have the prospect of another Autumn storm looming next weekend.
