Rang the surgery this afternoon to make an appointment for dad to see his GP, and was told his own GP has left. It actually came as quite a shock, because she was a great doctor and dad really liked her.

It seems a bit bad really that your GP, who you come to get to know and trust, can disappear without you being notified. I honestly think patients ought to be sent a letter to let them know their doc has gone.

No, but that's a bit harsh Robongar. I don't know about you but there is no way I would compare the relationship I have with my GP with that of my barber, let alone a bank manager.

Exactly this. A GP you get to know, and more importantly TRUST. I don't think it unreasonable to be told the GP is moving on, and be given assurances about their successor.

Doctors in my immediate area are generally useless. If you were a good doctor and employed by a national body would you really want to live and work in west London out of choice?

You see these doctors on TV chat shows sounding caring and you wonder what you have to do to get a good, caring, sympathetic doctor in this area.

So far I'm not convinced

Barber definitely and I'm sure he/she would. What's a bank manager?

If you had to see a GP in mainland Europe, most of the time you'd be confronted with a distinguished middle aged native of either gender that gave off an air of professionalism and gravitas

If you have to see a GP in Blighty,....

....I need say no more.
