In the army we were always told never to trust fuel gauges, typically if we were unsure we would find a stick and 'dip the tank'.
Strangely I have also seen chopper pilots in the AAC do the same on Gazelles.
RAF operated larger aircraft such as the Chinook, on the few times I flew on one, the RAF loadmaster had his head into a bubble type window mid fuselage and kept a very close eye on the gearbox all the time it was in flight.
A few were failing at the time
There was no discernible damage to the leading edges on the rotor blades, this suggests that they were not spinning when it came down. We should however wait for the full report of the AIB before speculating.
