'Glitch' closes bank transactions:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... iasco.html
Quote:
As a result of the problems on Monday night, all debit card cash withdrawals and purchases, some credit card transactions, plus online banking and banking via mobile phone, were blocked.

The computer collapse meant millions were unable to pay for online purchases on Cyber Monday, the busiest web shopping day of the year, while thousands were turned away at high street stores or could not pay for fuel at petrol stations or meals in restaurants.
Others were unable to take money out of cash machines.

'Glitch' grounds planes:

Quote:
Travel journalist Simon Calder said the technical glitch was a "disaster".
Quote:
Flights at airports across the UK - including Heathrow and Gatwick - have been delayed or cancelled by an air traffic control system problem.
Quote:
Thousands of passengers have seen their flights delayed by a "technical problem" at southern England's main air traffic control centre in Swanwick, Hampshire.
NATS air traffic control said in a statement: "Due to a technical problem at Swanwick we are currently experiencing some difficulty switching from night-time to daytime operation.”

I'll need to check Monday whether any of our systems were involved at Swanwick

Problem is companies change IT suppliers every few years and I've seen some horrendous systems that we take over and sooner or later they are going to crash due to ageing hardware and incompatible systems that only talk to each other by fluke. We also run the majority of IT for BAA at Heathrow and their systems are chronic. In the short term there is very little you can do as they won't pay out for decent kit.

A warning of future cyber terrorism perhaps

At the moment our suspicious pals in China, Russia (plus the US!!) and a number of emerging powers have the capability to cause havoc by atacking key IT systems. How long before terrorist groups get organised to do the same?

You can bet your life that these phones will have a computer based IT system involved in them somewhere!
