I wonder what the rainfall total was today, as unusually my garden was flooded (well, the flower bed and 50% of the lawn)?

Good day folks.....It seems like a good time to pop back with some weather news, since this week is likely to herald the first major storm of the winter for some parts of the UK.

There's no need to panic in our neck of the woods yet because its the far North and West of the UK which will likely bare the brunt, though that shouldn't be taken too lightly. Conditions there will be pretty atrocious by midweek.

The Met Office are issuing a number of severe weather warnings**, mainly for the North of the UK , but later in the week these warnings extend further South to cover London and the South East on Thursday and Friday. The warnings in our area are for the risk of gale force winds, particularly through the English Channel affecting Southern Coastal counties at the end of the week.

In addition to the warnings, the Met Office have issued what I consider to be a rather unusual and emotive bulletin which talks of a ' weather bomb '. The link to that is here :

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/learning/le ... eatherBomb

It's still a developing situation, so as always with the weather, things can change by the hour, but I'm just a bit surprised by the terminology they have used. It will be interesting to see how it pans out, but 'weather bomb' is not a term I would expect the professionals to use.

That said there are some pretty impressive wave heights being predicted for the far north and west as a result of this storm, up to 14 metres ( approximately 42 feet ) as the Atlantic swell is driven in. Anyone for surfing ?

All in all it could be an interesting few days of weather, and I will try and update as often as possible. The link to the weather warnings for London and the South East are here :

Thanks as always for reading.....please feel free to post your own thoughts and observations.

Funnily enough, with the weather reports on my Met office app I wondered if you would post. We are in line for 'something' Thursday/Friday but only a yellow warning so far.

^^^ Thanks for posting Kremmen.

As expected it was the very far north of the UK which experienced the worst of the initial storm yesterday and overnight, the Scottish Highlands and outlying islands further north.

Looking closer to home ( London and the South East ) it's a secondary Low Pressure system forming in the wake of that storm that needs watching as far as I'm concerned. It was a bit breezy overnight in our region with gusts of 30 - 40+ mph being recorded at Raf Northolt for several hours.

The signs are that on Friday the spin off Low could generate gusts of 50 - 60+ mph through much of Central and Southern England, and higher along Southern Coastal regions.

The Met Office tend to update their warnings around 11am and while the update is taking place the previous warning often disappears. Given the timing of your post Kremmen I suspect you viewed the Met Office website just as the update was taking place. The updated warning was issued at 11:48am on December 10th.

The current warning is valid from 00:10 hours - 09:00 hours Friday December 12th.

I wouldn't be too surprised to see this updated again this morning. It looks like being a fairly short lived affair in our region and an overnight event which is probably just as well, given that this new Low looks set to deepen significantly as it heads eastwards out into the North Sea.

Yes, just a low warning of some higher than usual wind.

being as the council came and cut a hedge yesterday and left most of it across the road the wind will shift it E or NE which is fine with me :)
