Simon Dee lived in a small one-bed flat in Winchester and in his latter years wrote angry letters to the local newspaper.

Ironically, that's a prerequisite for getting his sort of gig nowadays.

Way I see the Mayor of London regardless who gets the job, they want to take over all the running of the things I feel are nothing to do with the Mayor, one just need to look at Police & Fire, both budgets controlled by The Mayor of London, wait till you see the cuts planned for 2015, sale of West Drayton bad enough for our area, as for selling of New Scotland Yard to whom?? what was it £82 million more than the asking price some foreign investor paid, we seen what happen when foreign investor from same part of the world brought from the MOD the Barracks in Chelsea.
As for Transport, when I was a kid, you had railways in London we had London Transport who looked after the underground, with one bus company looking after one bus company, now we have so many different bus companies all given licences by transport for London, who gets it money & control from Mayor of London, we now have police officers funded by Mayor of London via Transport of London those offices only work on the buses, have only seen them in pairs on buses & then only when the children of today have lost the art of forming a queue, to me they seem to have no other use.
As for a Mayor who still wants to buy Water Cannon for streets of London, this are just a odd few items for me its a bad.

Enjoy the New Year.

Water cannon was in response to the late night brick shoppers in North London a few years ago when the police shot dead that criminal lowlife and the subsequent riots.

Unless you think it is quite acceptable for yobs to come rampaging down your street destroying your property whilst plod sits back because they don't have the tools to do the job.

Whilst Boris is at it we need some riot control guns and CS gas dispensers along with those water cannon.

Sorry have to disagree with you :-
As you say Water Cannon in response to the riots, those riots took place in quite a few areas of London, by the time Water Cannons could be brought into action the crowd would have long gone, only area in U.K. water cannon used N.I. when trouble was expected marching season as seen in Drumcree or when gangs had been seen to gather day before, giving the water cannon crew enough time to have the cannon placed near to where trouble was expected. The London Riots happen with out warning, logistics of moving water cannon across London is not going to be a easy task, the sheer weight of the cannon fully loaded being moved from where Hendon to say Brixton plus heaven help anyone who might near one if a tyre should blow. Forgetting all this, if used the water cannot pick off those in the riot, as seen in Germany a person on his way home from work, nothing to do with a riot, got hit full one, he will not walk again, very large compensation pay out to consider, no I do not think anyone should rampaging out of control, other ways can be used a lot cheap, mounted patrols lot more economical, they can scatter a crowd, used for crowd control etc, plus way not if not busy have the officers on horse in urban areas, far better for chasing scum bags who mug a old lady & run off, the other benefit children normally love animals, to see police officers riding around the local street on horses might get people to know the police a bit better. I used to walk my dog & where no one talks to you, out with the dog, people love to chat.

C.S. Gas , O.K, to disperse hostile crowd, its easy use, no problem getting to areas its required, problems occur with weather as seen with gas warfare, just need wind to change & you have a problem, people you fire at if intending to cause a riot, these days will have better protection than those who fire the gas.

Riot Control Guns, now we are talking, take out the scum bags, cuts court cost, except one drawback European Court of Appeal & Human Rights, some over paid legal expert will fined out the police did not give the correct order of intend to fire or the scum bag did not understand plain English.

Bring back SPG worked in Southall, one riot never happen again.

He has only bought three I think.

Handy for on the spot things such as if the proles all turn up to have a go at plod outside the Ecuadorian embassy for example. They are usually moved empty and fill up on site from street hydrants.
CS disperses in pretty quick time, Usually within a few minutes. If you are on the periphery of a riot observing say from a balcony then they pretty stupid and may get a lungful. Most sensible people will be indoors with the doors bolted and the windows closed.

It is 3 Water Cannon he is after, at a cost of £3 million each, plenty of money to keep regional police stations open or more Bobbies on the beat. Buy no sell off property, get rid of top grade police specialist & recruit police officers from the ethnic minority, do not worry if have a criminal record, we will change the rules & if you happen to have a degree regardless what it in & issued by, we will give you a higher pay rank & save you having to start at the bottom, like everyone else who join since the police formed, I have digressed.
The water cannon, 2nd handed from Germany, are the Germans replacing them No, they do not work, the ones being brought are the old cabin type, not state of the art where the operator has clear vision, another case of any old equipment for those who need it & knowing how our friends in Europe will react the first time the cannon deployed, “cannot use those, they do not comply with European Health & Safety rules, as for Human Right, dread to think what they will say.
But no despite being told by the head of the police in Northern Ireland the only police service to have used water cannon, they will not work with types of riot control intended for in London, as mentioned Northern Ireland knew when a demonstration was likely to take place, the cannon would be put in place before any form of demonstrations kick off, research has shown all the riots to have taken place in London, water cannon would have been completely useless, should the order be given to purchase them, they will only end up in a compound not used then £9 million being wasted, that price does not included cost of training those who will work the cannon should they be ever be required to do so, this is same time to save money any new recruit does not now under take the same basic training, a few weeks AT Hendon then it out on the streets, the austerity cuts so far inflicted on the Met so for are only the tip of the iceberg.
As for C.S. riot gas, look on E Bay, you can buy far better respirators than those supplied to the police & army, you can also find on any search engine ways to handle CS Gas if it comes your way, as for those stupid people who are acting in a lawful manner & get a lungful, own faults, try telling that to those caught up in “Bloody Sunday”.
Have said enough & too much, it will I feel a bad move to even buy Water Cannon, will leave subject alone now & beg to differ about using them.
