According to the BBC, as of 6pm Northolt (RAF Airport, therefore Hillingdon) had a snowfall of 7cm (in old money, that's two and three-quarter inches)

It makes me wonder how they measure snowfall as on a windy runway, the snow isn't going to settle as it would in a relatively protected housing estate or where buildings are is it?

Good point SOT but the Met Office weather station at RAF Northolt is located inside the perimeter fence close to the A40, not far from where the original entrance to the airfield was.

Similar with the Met Office Heathrow weather station, that one is located just off the Northern Perimiter Road. Both locations are official Met Office sites and meet with all the criteria for measuring wind/rain/sleet/snow etc. Hope this info helps.

I will be doing a prediction for Sundays expected snowfall later this evening.

Stay warm, drive safely, and thanks for reading and posting. Moley 8-)

Its a distinct possibility Jane.

This times its all eyes to the south as a frontal system over Biscay/France threatens to head north/north east into the UK on Sunday morning. Once again the track of this system is far from certain, but the current signs are it could deliver several hours of snow to southern and eastern counties during the day.

Accumulations are likely to be highest in a line roughly from West Sussex north eastwards through Surrey, East London and East Anglia, where 5-10cms ( 2-4" ) are possible. This is all subject to change nearer the time as more data becomes available.

Please stay tuned to local tv and radio broadcasts for bulletins.

Moley. ( Reporting from a very chilly South Coast )

^^ I gather it is snowing in the London area. Down here on the South Coast its been snowing for the last couple of hours, giving a covering of 5 cms ( 2" ) so far.
