***UPDATED SUNDAY MARCH 10th 2013 @ 2230 hrs***

The increasingly strong East/North Easterly winds are continuing to blow a few light snow showers off the North Sea into coastal parts of Suffolk and Essex this evening. One or two of those showers have made it as far south as Mid Kent/Sussex.

The main area of interest for London and The South East is still centred around where that
' Channel Low ' heads on Monday and Tuesday though, and even now it is still far from certain.
It's that uncertainty which makes me reluctant to make any personal predictions of snowfall for our region.

This message was issued by The Jersey ( C.I ) Met Office earlier today though. A Code Red Warning:

I will be updating for our region a bit later. Moley :?

The light snow showers I mentioned in my last post have have now made it inland as far as our very own London Borough of Hillingdon in the past hour or so, and continuing to feed in off The North Sea. I don't expect to see any accumulations from these though.

However, the Channel Low is now showing definate signs of 'pepping up' and the first band of showers from this is already heading across The English Channel towards South West and Southern England, and at a faster rate than the models were showing just a few hours ago.

So.......at the present time we have cold air sitting right over London and The South East, with light snow showers being driven inland on strong east/north easterly winds, and a Low Pressure system with plenty of moisture wrapped up in it, approaching from the near opposite direction. It could be a difficult 24-48 hours.

Again I am reluctant to try and predict the potential snowfall from this set-up, but I would advise caution when travelling in the next 48 hours and urge you all to listen out for your local weather forecasts and travel bulletins. There is a distinct possibilty of some significant snowfall and travel disruption, especially in the far South.

Be careful out there. Moley :|

No snow or damp ground this morning, just a biting wind. -0.8°C which is warmer than I was expecting.

Well moley South Coast here, not to bad at all on Sunday was out working in garden. Different day today, crocus are under a blanket of snow and daffodils are flat on the grass. Only a light covering this morning but from midday it is coming down consistantly and setteling. The wind is bitter, flakes are getting a bit bigger now. We dont get much snow on South Coast so it is a nice surprise for me, however Hastings have not gritted anywhere despite warning, so overnight when temps drop and the ice appears that will be a whole new ball game. Just for info think about the fishermen who are out there.

 Batty Bat

Thanks for the report from Hastings Bucks, and its not over yet for your neck of the woods. The current track of the Low suggests a few more hours of snow for The South East, and South Coast in particular. This could lead to a FURTHER 10cms ( 4" ) of level snow by morning, on top of what has already settled.

If you draw a line from roughly The Isle of Wight, across to the Thames Estuary, anywhere south and east of that line is under the main snow belt for much of the night.

Reports of chaos are coming in thick and fast on weather websites. The Channel Islands were experiencing some of the worst conditions in living memory. Closer to home in our region the coastal cities/towns of Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings are practically at a standstill this evening, along with many smaller towns and villages on the coast and inland.

Reports also suggest that local councils have been out treating major roads throughout the day, but near gale force winds have blown the salt/grit away as quick as they can spread it.

I doubt the Hastings fishing fleet will be setting out tonight, conditions in the English Channel are atrocious with very rough seas, blizzards and near zero visibility. The north coast of France is reporting level snow depths of up to 50cms ( 20" ) in places.

All in all this is a major weather event and I would advise EXTREME CAUTION for anyone planning to travel in the worst affected areas for the next 24-36 hours.

So far London has escaped all bar a few brief snow flurries, and its likely to stay that way.

Moley

^^ You are right there Jane. While the actual temperatures have been close to 0c ( 32f ) for the last couple of days, the strong to gale force northeasterly winds have resulted in a wind chill ( feels like ) temperature of -6c to -10c ( 21 to 14f ) for London and the South East.

Those winds have been a very mixed blessing in terms of snow depths because while they have almost cleared the snow from some surfaces it's piled up in drifts elsewhere. Something anyone venturing out in the morning needs to bear in mind, especially on rural roads in the far South East. (*** Sussex/Kent and also parts of Essex *** ). Ice will be another danger, especially where it has tonight been covered by another layer of snow.

While we in London have definately ' dodged a weather bullet ', from the southern section of the M25 southwards its a very different story.

***I cannot emphasise strongly enough the need to take extra care in these areas. ***

As you say, the temps were not that bad but my house was colder inside this morning than it's been for years. That wind seemed to have an effect on interior temps as well.

Hopefully now the slow upward climb
