As far as the next few days go for London and The South East weather prospects I might just as well flick a coin in the air and see which way it lands.

Its yet another battle between cold air spilling down from the north versus milder Atlantic Low Pressure systems and fronts attacking us from the west/south west. Rain or snow ??

The latest information available suggests a lot of rain for most parts of our region, but above the M4 and into the northern home counties, the Midlands and all places north further snow is the most likely outcome.

It really is a case of 'nowcasting' rather than forecasting.

Flooding is already occuring in parts of the West Country with some locations reporting up to 50mm's ( 2" ) of rainfall so far today, and more to follow.

From the Midlands northwards the rain is readily turning to snow now, and some locations there may see level snow depths of 40-50cms ( 15-20" ) before the weekend is over. I am still hopefull London and The South East will avoid the worst of this weather system, but for anyone planning to travel further afield, its worth checking conditions before setting out.

While things should settle down as we head into next week, there is still no sign of any real Spring warmth on the horizon.

We seem to have escaped the worst of it. As I drove into Surrey this morning the roadside puddles got deeper and deeper so it only just missed us.

^^ Its not over yet Kremm. Overnight and Saturday morning could 'Spring' one or two suprises in the north of our region. Apparently there is already a light covering of snow on The Chilterns.

I know weather conditions in some parts of the country are pretty rough, but I have never heard of anything like this happening before. Sellafield power station shut down due to weather ?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cumbria-2189565

Even more astounding given the fact that Didcot A power station was officially closed today at 2pm.

Moley

Edit: the first link to the Sellafield story was closed, so I will try this one:

I woke up to a covering of snow here in the north of the Borough on Saturday, and apparently snow was reported further south as well, into South London and Surrey. Not quite on this scale though which were todays images from Cumbria, and similar scenes were common in the north of the UK and Northern Ireland :

While the snow should eventually fizzle out in most parts of the country by the end of this weekend, the cap of very cold air currently sitting over the Uk shows no signs of going anywhere soon. Temperatures are likely to remain well below the March average for most of next week, even here in London and The South East. I think daytime maximums will be in the region of 1-4 C ( 34-39c ), with cold easterly winds making it feel feel distinctly uncomfortable at times.

Eastern counties will see the occasional snow flurry heading in off the North Sea during this time, but as we head towards the Easter Weekend there is another threat of widespread snow as Low Pressure tries to move in from The Atlantic.

I think that about sums it up Kremm. The computer models are now hinting at the next Atlantic Low heading slightly further north over the Easter Weekend, so temperatures in the South of the UK may pick up by a few degrees at the end of this week.

Needless to say there's a downside for us here in London and The South East IF the Low follows that track, and its still far too early to predict with any certainty, but IF it does, the Easter Weekend could be a complete washout.

I just wish I could be the bearer of good weather news for once, but try as I might I can't see any positive signs at all in the forseeable future. It could be a while before we can all play this song again:
